Spring and summer are the two seasons that represent the best time of the year to wear more colour and patterns. No more muted tones, solid-coloured shirts or boring accessories – it’s time to make patterns a focal point in your outfits. One of the best trends in menswear is stripes – a traditional pattern, stripes are having a big return in S/S13.
Nautical inspired clothing and Breton stripes are still quite popular among fashion-forward men. However, this season the trendy stripes are much more varied. The colour-blocking effect and the use of bright and even clashing colours are also big in urban wear this year – the goal is to create a striking visual impact and leave a long-lasting impression.
If we take a look at some of the designer collections for Spring/Summer 2013 we can see the traditional stripe spectrum in the collections of Gucci and Diesel. The styles are sleek and the popular hues are black and grey. However, there is also the pinstripe tailoring introduced by Gucci – the presence of vivid red pinstripe in a black 3-piece suit. Stripes are also big in bomber jackets, as proven by Diesel. Of course you don’t have to copy the runway designer looks in order to stay trendy. Stripes are prevalent in all the major retailers this season – from the classic Breton t-shirts to the bold colour-blocking pieces. Some of the other trendy pieces include messenger bags, scarves and double-breasted blazers.
Pair striped pieces with solid-coloured ones or be extra bold and experiment with different sizes of stripes or combination of stripes and checks. Just be wary when thinking to wear stripes from head to toe. Allow the stripes to make a statement, but don’t overdo the trend.
